King Of Rugger by Lewis Jones
“Lewis Jones is to Rugby what Stanley Matthews is to soccer, Keith Miller to cricket and Sugar Ray Robinson to boxing. In this racy and absorbing book, the outstanding post-war star of rugby union and rugby league football tells his life story.”
That is how the autobiography of Lewis Jones was introduced upon its original publication in 1958. And it has lost none of its allure since.
In King of Rugger, Jones tells of his dramatic rise to fame from schoolboy rugby union in the Gower Peninsula of South Wales to leading points scorer in Wales’ first Triple Crown winning side for thirty-nine years. Equally fascinating is the hunt for his services by rugby league clubs, and his eventual signing at Leeds for a record fee.
Upon turning professional, Lewis Jones became the biggest box office star in rugby league football. In this book, he compares both rugby codes and “tells the innermost secrets of the two games”. He also describes how, in the 1956-57 season, he gained the greatest triumph of his career when he became the first player to score 500 points in a season.
Along with the original text, this updated edition of King of Rugger contains a brand new introduction by official Leeds historian Phil Caplan, a number of original photographs and a new afterword in which the author himself, Lewis Jones, brings us up to date with events since the publication of, this, one of rugby league’s seminal autobiographies.
