The 1996 Challenge Cup final is a serious contender to be rated as Wembley s best ever. Two powerhouses of the new Super League era produced an absolute thriller, Saints fighting back from a deficit of 26-12 to win by eight points. At 20 years old, Robbie Paul became Wembley’s youngest captain but boy did he lead by example, scoring a hat-trick of tries, including a memorable solo effort from inside his own half. However, St Helens had their own inspirational skipper in Bobbie Goulding whose towering kicks led to three tries in quick succession giving his team the lead, before ensuring the victory with a defence-splitting diagonal run to set up the 13th try of the game. The final tally of 40 points to 32 was the highest recorded for both the winners and runners-up in a Challenge Cup Final.
